Millipedes of the Night

Millipedes are nocturnal creatures that usually come out at night. During the day, they coil up under leaf litter, under rocks or in holes and crevices, depending on the behaviour of each species. At night, they come out of hiding to forage through the leaf litter and wood. In this night hunt, millipedes were almost everywhere. Mainly giant millipedes, like this one.

Pill Millipedes were not that commonly seen. However, they were still common during the night and most of them didn't coil themselves into a ball when I went nearby to photograph them.

And of course, there were the regular red ones.

We decided to stop the hunt and went back home. The next night hunt was to take place within two days.

Pro! Too bad I don't have a steam with lots of wild trees around to go night hunting. The pill millipede looks so fat! :)

Well, you dont need a stream with trees around to go night hunting... In India you can go night-hunting anywhere, but there may be dangerous creatures like venomous snakes and scorpions.

The pill millipede is fat so that when it coils itself for protection, it turns into a perfect sphere (ball).
