Not Just Ant-Mimic Mantids

I was walking through a narrow path up to my grandfather's rubber estate when I spotted two weaver-ants. Something told me that they were not the usual ants, so I turned back and took a closer look. They weren't even ants! They were small mantids mimicing the nasty weaver-ants.

I was surprised to have seen such an intelligent insect. Weaver ants are well-known for their nasty bites, and these mantids were sure to be safe as they resemble these ants. No predator would want to mess with them!

I only spotted two of them, however. But that itself shows that they were juveniles, or hatchlings. One of the weaver-ant-mimic mantids (shown above) hopped off to another plant soon, so I could not shoot it again. The other one stayed on an exposed leaf and so I took some shots as it posed.

Grooming itself.

My camera's flash was a bit too intense. That's why the subjects look very bright. Sorry about that!
