Variegated Flutterer

Variegated Flutterers are dragonflies that are commonly seen here. They are very common and can be seen flying around in hundreds when the sun is out. Usually they fly about a few metres above ground, and they rarely stop to rest. Hence it is difficult to photograph them since they are in the air most of the time.

I happened to spot this female resting on a dried up plant in my neighbour's garden. I slowly went close to take some shots. It was one chance since they rarely come to rest.

I tried using flash for once but it looked like sunlight was more than enough to get a good shot of this dragonfly. Before long it returned to it's group of baskers to enjoy the hot sun.

Haha! They look a bit like butterflies because of the large hindwings.

Yes they do. The way they fly also looks likt butterflies fluttering in the air. That's why they are called 'Flutterers'.
